Odds are you’re not getting enough vitamin D. In fact, the CDC reports that as many as 23 million Americans have a “severe” deficiency, so nutrition authorities are beginning to recommend higher dosages. But that may present another problem entirely.
Vitamin D is an important steroid hormone in the body that helps to regulate mineral levels in the bone, kidneys, intestines, and liver.† It plays a major role in calcium absorption, and both a deficiency, and excess, of this vitamin can lead to similar effects. Most of the calcium you consume should go to your bones and teeth, but it can end up in places you don’t want it to as well. A 2016 study shows that there is a strong association between extremely high levels of vitamin D and high levels of calcium. A review in the American Society of Nephrology indicates that when vitamin D and calcium concentrations get too high, calcium starts getting deposited in your arteries. In other words, a vitamin you’re taking to improve your health could actually end up harming it!†
Now enter vitamin K2. Vitamin K is an important fat-soluble vitamin that is obtained from certain oils, fermented foods, and leafy green vegetables. It can also be synthesized by intestinal microflora. It plays critical roles in blood vessel integrity and clotting, and is a major player in bone health.† Research shows that supplementing with K2 activates a specific protein which inhibits calcium from depositing in the vessel walls, allowing it to get into your bones and teeth where you need it most.† In light of this new research, we’ve added K2 to our Vitamin D formula.†
