The word arktos comes from the Greek word for bear. Lappa comes from the Greek word meaning to hold fast.
The Burdock Root is a long black or brown root of the Burdock plant that’s native to Europe and Asia, but now grows worldwide. The average root size for cultivated arctium lappa is an average of 1/2 pound each, but can weigh up to 2 pounds.
It was introduced into the United States by English settlers in the 1600s. The root contains powerful antioxidants, such as phenolic acids, quercetin and luteolin. It is commonly used in cooking, especially in Japanese cuisine.
